While we suggest reading the details below, here is a quick video on updating your virtual appliance and launchers.
The Login Enterprise appliance can be updated from the Appliance console
NOTE: An internet connection from the Login Enterprise Virtual Appliance is required to establish a connection to the public Login VSI software repository. Please make sure the following URLs are white-listed in your environment:
https://loginvsidata.s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/LoginPI3_ISO/public/
https://loginvsidata.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/LoginPI3_ISO/public/
NOTE: It is recommended to always backup the Virtual Appliance before doing the update. Taking a snapshot using the hypervisor management system is one suggested method.
Update Notifications
As of release 4.11, Login Enterprise now shows a notification on the overview page when a new version of the Virtual Appliance is available. Below is an example of what the notification looks like.
Note: This feature is only available for online appliances. The notification will not be shown for offline appliances, or for online appliances without internet connectivity.
Performing an online update of the Login Enterprise Appliance
First open the Virtual Appliance console and login to open the maintenance menu.
Once the menu is open simply select the option "Update"
Once in the Updates menu select the "Update from the internet" option.
You are then presented with the following message:
To update enter the "y" key. To keep the current version simply enter "N".
Once the update is started you need to wait for it to finish and press enter once it is done to return to the menu.
Please reboot the Login Enterprise Virtual Appliance for best results when the update is complete.
You have now updated your Login Enterprise appliance. Please make sure to update / upgrade all existing launchers after every Appliance update.
Performing an offline update of the Login Enterprise Appliance
If the Login Enterprise Virtual Appliance does not have access to the internet, it can be updated using a locally mounted ISO file. Please refer to your Hypervisor vendor on how to successfully mount an ISO to the virtual appliance.
It is recommended to shutdown the Virtual Appliance, attach the ISO, then start the appliance. Again when the machine is started we need to log-in to the appliance.
When in the Maintenance Menu please go to Updates
Once in the Updates menu select the "Update from ISO" option.
You are then presented with the following message:
When enter is pressed, after a few seconds, you are asked if you are sure you wish to update.
Typing "N" in the menu will cancel the update sequence. Typing "y" will start the update sequence.
Once the update is started you need to wait for it to finish and press enter once it is done to return to the menu.
Please reboot the Login Enterprise Virtual Appliance after the update completes for best results.
You have now updated your Login Enterprise appliance. Please make sure to update / upgrade all existing launchers after every Appliance update.
Performing a system update of the Login Enterprise operating environment
Within Login Enterprise a feature is built-in to the update menu, the "System update from the internet" option. This option will download the Linux / Debian security and other updates. It is recommended this is integrated in your default update schedule for your infrastructure servers.
To use this update please go to the Virtual Appliance and log in until you see the Maintenance Menu.
When the Maintenance Menu is presented select the Updates menu:
Once in the Updates menu select the "System update from the internet" option.
Once selected it will immediately start downloading and installing the latest updates from the internet.
Once done you can press enter to go back to the Maintenance Menu:
Please reboot the Login Enterprise Virtual Appliance after the update completes for best results.
You have now updated the Login PI 3 Virtual Appliance system.
Updating the Launchers
The launchers do not update themselves automatically. This requires you to manually update the launchers yourself, which is a very easy task. We strongly advice to update the launchers after each appliance update.
First, disable any and all active environments so they will not try to launch sessions during the update process.
Secondly you need to login to the launcher machine and close "Login Enterprise Launcher" application.
Once this is done you can download the new Launcher files from the Login Enterprise Web interface (e.g., https://myvirtualappliance/configuration/launchers location).
Once downloaded, extract the zipfile and run the "Setup.msi".
Once installed you can enable the environments to run and Login PI will pick up where it left off.
