Edge version 133 is incompatible with Login Enterprise browser-mode tests

Issue overview

Login Enterprise uses Selenium drivers to attach to the Microsoft Edge browser for testing automation. Edge version 133, released in February 2025, fails to communicate with Selenium properly. The browser will start, and will show a blank page with the message “Microsoft Edge is being controlled by automated test software”:

However, the test script will immediately fail. The error in the Engine logs, which you can see in the Application Failure event on the Login Enterprise web page, will include the following:

2025-02-14T16:04:12.7326062Z [Error]: An error occurred while running the script: 'session not created: probably user data directory is already in use, please specify a unique value for --user-data-dir argument, or don't use --user-data-dir (SessionNotCreated)'

You may get different errors if you are not using drivers version 132 or 133. But when you are using the correct drivers for Edge 133, you will always get the “user data directory” error.

Troubleshooting

Login VSI is investigating what we can do about this. For now, our only recommendation is to downgrade to Edge version 132, and block upgrades to 133. For the previous versions of Edge, see Microsoft’s download site. You may be able to force Edge to remain at a particular version by setting the Target Version Override as a policy. For details, see the Microsoft documentation. Or you may be able to disable automatic Edge updates. An appropriate previous stable version is 132.0.2957.127.
